I was able to find a display of the new The Buffs lipsticks from Maybelline at Bed Bath and Beyond recently and jumped at the chance to try one of them. I’m generally a fan of Maybelline’s lipsticks but personally find nude shades tough to pick out, as I naturally have pretty red-toned lips and lighter, neutral shades can sometimes look a big awkward when layered on them without the proper prep. Although I’m still definitely eyeing some of the deeper shades, I wanted to try a lighter one and test it out first.
This collection contains a bunch of nude and neutral shades all across the spectrum, from light to dark, in great contrast to The Vivids collection from last year. I grabbed the shade 920 Nude Lust, which is on the lighter end and pretty darn neutral – there isn’t a lot of pink or yellow in it, but looking at it in-store I thought it still had enough depth to look “alive” … especially compared to the other lighter shades in the display.
When I first swatched this it didn’t seem to have incredible opacity, so I knew that when I wore it I’d probably need to prime my lips using my MAC Lip Erase (not a life-changing product, but a step above putting foundation or concealer on my lips). However, it did have better coverage on my lips than I anticipated, so I think it will look very natural and pretty on a lot of people. I will need to continue to prep, though, due to my natural coloring. Just for reference, I’m including a photo of my bare lips.
Above, I’m also wearing: Pixi Flawless Vitamin Veil foundation in Fair, Pixi Correction Concentrate (review), DreamWorld Hermetica finishing powder in Whipped Peach, L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly mascara in Blackest Black, L’Oreal Brow Shaping Duet in Blonde, Jane Iredale PureBrow tinted brow gel in Blonde (review), and Physician’s Formula Happy Booster blush in Natural.
In all honesty, when I first put it on I felt like the shade looked more “dead” on me than I had hoped and I was a bit disappointed. But I’m feeling like it looks pretty good in photographs, so I’ll continue to play around with it. It’d certainly be a nice match for a more dramatic eye.
Like I mentioned, I’m still also interested in some of the deeper shades. Maple Kiss is looking fun to me, and the internet keeps telling me that the brown tones of the ’90s are back in style.
The Color Sensational lipsticks cost around $7 and are available at Ulta and drugstores. I spotted the display of The Buffs at Bed Bath and Beyond, but I’d imagine it won’t be long before they pop up in more places.
Have you tried any of these new shades out yet? Have you found any you really love?
