I bought the NYX Dewy Finish Makeup Setting Spray from Ulta a few months back when I had a coupon to play with. It’s priced at only $8 so I did’t have to think too hard about whether it was worth the spend, and I’d already heard good things about it from people like Emily from Beauty Broadcast. It’s supposed to be a lightweight and comfortable spray to help make your makeup last longer throughout the day while offering a subtle, fresh glow.
NYX offers a Matte Finish in addition to the Dewy Finish and I’m curious about both, but I thought I’d take things one step at a time and just try one of them at first. A dewy finish appeals to me because I always use at least a little bit of powder on my face, whether it be a touch of finishing powder of a full application of a powder foundation. A spritz of a little moisture is a great finishing touch that can help the powder look a little fresher when things might otherwise look a little heavy or obvious on the skin.
The spray nozzle on the bottle works pretty well, though I sometimes get little beads of the spray sitting on my skin. So, it could come out a bit finer, but to remedy this I usually just tap a couple of fingers around my face to just make sure there aren’t any obvious droplets. You could probably also lightly tap a sponge around if you’re very conscious about keeping your hands off your face. I don’t find it to be a big deal.
I do normally experience some shine issues in the center of my face, so my reservation about picking out this spray was that I wasn’t sure if a dewy mist might exacerbate that. Thankfully, I don’t find that it does. In fact, I’ll go so far to say it might help keep my shine at bay just a little. I don’t think the spray necessarily combats oil, but it seems to give my makeup a slightly stronger backbone to stand up against it throughout the day.
It does also do it’s job in keeping makeup looking good as new all day, too. It doesn’t feel to thick or hairspray-like on skin, but I do notice good lasting power on the days I wear this. I haven’t made too much of a habit to notice what kinds of ingredients go into setting sprays, but when I looked on the back of this bottle I was surprised at how few ingredients are actually in this one.
Ingredients: Aqua, Butylene Glycol, AMP-Acrylates/Allyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Methylpropanediol, Phenoxyethanol / Ethylhexylglycerin, Biosaccharide Gum-2, Disodium EDTA.
This setting spray fulfills all the criteria points I had for it: it gives my face a fresh look, helps keep things lasting throughout the day (and night), and even helps out with oil a little bit. It’s under $10, too, which is just awesome. I don’t find it to be a miraculous product, but it’s certainly a good one!
