I’d never heard of the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant before, but I received a deluxe sample in one of my December Sample Society subscription boxes and I’m always excited to try new exfoliating products. I initially had assumed that this was some sort of gritty scrub, but it’s actually a very fine rice-based powder that releases papain, salicylic acid and rice enzymes to make skin smoother and brighter.

The instructions say to mix a little bit of water with the powder in your hand and gently wash it over skin for one minute. The powder actually feels extremely soft and smooth on the skin, so I’ll have to admit that when I used it for the first time I totally overdid it and probably scrubbed for 3 or 4 minutes. It just didn’t feel like I was doing anything harsh to my skin! When I washed it off, however, it was clear that it had affected the texture of my skin (and my skin felt a tad raw, thanks to my overzealous use of the product).

After that first experience, I was very conscious to truly keep the washing to about one minute. It leaves my skin feeling very clean, soft and smooth. I didn’t really get in the habit of using it daily, but definitely enjoyed using it every 2 or 3 days or so and I’d say it’d definitely be gentle enough for daily use as long as you’re conscious of how long you apply it. Dermalogica says that in addition to the exfoliating ingredients, they’ve included a blend of green tea, ginkgo and colloidal oatmeal to help soothe and calm skin.

Ingredients: Microcrystalline Cellulose, Magnesium Oxide, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Colloidal Oatmeal, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Allantoin, Papain, Salicylic Acid, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, PCA, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Populus Tremuloides Bark Extract, Cyclodextrin, Lauryl Methacrylate/Glycol Dimethacrylate Crosspolymer, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Limonene, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Citric Acid, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891) , Hexylene Glycol.

I’m not sure if this is an issue with the full size bottle, but my deluxe sample is very messy. It has a sifter that can’t be closed, and  screw-top lid that does not keep the powder in the bottle. Even when it’s fully closed, I can’t shake the bottle and sticking it in a travel bag is out of the question because so much of the powder would fall out when I opened the top. In the photo above, you can even see some of the powder that’s crept outside of the lid. I’m not interested in wasting any of the powder … this isn’t a cheap product!

The full size costs $52 and includes 2.6 oz, which I’d guess would last you quite a while since you only need a small sprinkle for each use. I think it’s a pretty great product! You can buy it at Dermalogica and Beauty Bar.

Have you tried it? Do you have a favorite exfoliating product?
