The Maybelline Color Whisper lip colors are ones that I really enjoy. I have four shades that are flattering and really easy to wear: A Plum Prospect, Rose of Attraction, Made-It Mauve, and Orange Attitude. These are vivid but sheer shades that have a lightweight texture and a “kiss of shine”.

The Color Whispers rival the L’Oreal Colour Riche Balms when it comes to how easy they are to use, and the sheer but noticeable color and light shine that they provide. I reach for the Balms a little more often just because the shades I have are much more natural and I can apply them confidently without a mirror. My Color Whispers are somewhat vivid shades so I personally like to use a mirror with them, but in reality it’s probably not a big deal either way.

The Color Whispers are lightly hydrating, though if your lips are in bad shape you may prefer to reach for the Maybelline Baby Lips lip balms instead, just because that’s what they’re there for. But the Color Whispers are great. They come in twenty appealing shades, feel good, and look pretty. As I tried on my four shades in quick succession for the photos below, my lips were slightly more hydrated at the end than they were when I started.

In general I will also say I love the Color Whispers (and Balms, too, for that matter) because I walk around the city to get to and from work and do most of my errands, and my hair will always stick to my lipgloss. But with these, I can get the light shine and color without any of the stickiness. The Color Whispers are extremely lightweight and don’t have any waxiness, and Maybelline describes them as gel-color. The Revlon Lip Butters, on the other hand, are a similar product but feel heavier and closer to a lipstick.

Lastly, I also love that the Color Whispers barely have a smell at all. The L’Oreal Balms have a heavier and more obviously artificial scent that definitely bothers me. The Color Whispers have a light, sort of fruity smell that I don’t even notice when I go to apply them. Love that.

In the swatches, you can see that the colors apply evenly, and while they can be built up a little bit, they are not opaque. Some colors are a little punchier than others. In my collection, A Plum Prospect stands out as being especially vivid on my lips.

I naturally have red-toned lips, so that color definitely shows through, and I’ve personally stayed toward the deeper end of the Color Whisper shade selection for that reason. Lighter, sheer colors can look like they’re fighting with my natural coloring. I still have more shades on my wish list, but I’ve tried to keep the collection simple so far for money’s sake. I’m letting it grow slowly over time.

You can find the Color Whispers at Maybelline, Target, Ulta, and drugstores for around $7.49. Like any drugstore makeup, you can look out for sales and coupons to save some money.

Have you tried these? Do you have any favorite shades?

  1. I generally hate lipsticks/any lip product besides tinted lipbalms, but I love these. The non-stickiness of these + the lightweight texture = AMAZING in my eyes. I have Pin Up Peach and Who Wore it Red-er, but this post has reminded me of why I love these so much, and I’ll definitely need to pick more up when they’re on sale!

    1. Hey Vanessa! Those are two shades I’ve contemplated buying. I love that Maybelline will come out with such extensive shade ranges for new products. I think the Color Whispers and the Elixirs were the same, 20 shades at launch. Lots to choose from.
