The Vitamin E Overnight Serum-in-Oil from The Body Shop is a facial oil that’s formulated to replenish and recharge skin overnight, and is supposed to combine the potency of a serum and the nourishment of an oil. This is a hydrating blend of oils that includes wheatgerm oil, community fair trade soya oil, and vitamin E, as well as a handful of other beneficial plant oils.
This product was added to The Body Shop’s Vitamin E range about a year ago, and I picked it up at the beginning of the summer, 6 or 7 months ago. I enjoy facial oils and would like to continue to explore the Vitamin E range, so I was excited when I heard that this product was launched. I ended up buying it while I was traveling, actually, and it ended up being a perfect product for me at that moment. I was road tripping through the Southwest at the time, and my skin definitely needed some extra hydration!
To start with, I wasn’t entirely sure what The Body Shop meant by “serum-in-oil”. The ingredients list is dominated by plant oils, and the only thing I see on the list that I think would think of as a serum ingredient would be the antioxidant tocopherol acetate, or vitamin E acetate. So, my thinking is that they’re selling this as a vitamin E serum delivered in a hydrating oil blend. I still think the “serum-in-oil” label is meant to appeal to consumers as a novelty, but it is what it is.
This is a clear oil that feels fairly watery and smells similar to the other Vitamin E products at The Body Shop. It does have fragrance in it, and while I sort of wish it didn’t, I do enjoy the gentle scent of that product line. When I use this on my face, I like to either use it as a final moisturizing step after the rest of my skincare products or mixed into my moisturizing cream in my hands before being applied to my face as one step.
The Body Shop advertises that this formula is non-greasy and fast-absorbing. I wouldn’t say that it’s heavy, but it doesn’t just disappear on skin, and it’s also more hydrating than other lightweight oils I’ve tried. I found that it made a huge difference in the moisture level of my skin in just a 2 of 3 days of use, and I while the drier areas of my face benefit greatly from daily use of the oil, I don’t need to use it on the oilier areas of my combination skin on a daily basis as it actually starts to add to my natural greasiness.
I generally use 2-4 drops of the oil on my face at night, depending on how badly my skin needs it at the time, and I’ve also gotten in the habit of using it on other areas, as well. I like to pull it down my neck and chest, which are areas that I’m trying to pay attention to as I go through my routine. I also found that when I run a bit of the oil over my lips as I’m getting ready for bed, it actually makes a real difference in how healthy my lips feel overnight and the next day. I’ve also been using a bit on my hands at night, mostly because it’s convenient and it works really nicely.
The bottle has just around an ounce of oil in it, and it definitely is a long-lasting amount of product. My skin really likes it and I tend to use it on a near-daily basis, though only in the areas that really need it. I’m extremely happy with the product as it’s nice to have something that makes a noticeable difference in skin in a very short time frame, and it’s been a great thing to have on hand throughout the warm and cold seasons. I’d particularly recommend it for those with normal to dry skin.
