The weekend face

Tinted SPF, brightening concealer, and translucent powder
Tinted SPF, brightening concealer, and translucent powder

I’ve been having a lot of days where I don’t feel the need to wear a full face of makeup and have been figuring out how minimal to go. I can easily get sucked into the 30+ minute routine because once I add some foundation coverage, then I need to add bronzer to add dimension back to my face, and then I need blush to liven up my cheeks, and then I need brows and lashes in order to balance it out, and … it starts to get out of hand really quickly. However, on the days when I really want to get out the door quickly and look natural, here are the 3 products I reach for.

1. Tinted SPF: I’m using the Shiseido Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector SPF 43 (full review) in shade 1

2. Brightening concealer: I’m using the L’Oreal Visible Lift CC Eye (quick review) in shade Light

3. Translucent powder: I’m using Laura Mercier translucent loose setting powder (full review)

For giving a bit of coverage as well as good sun protection, I’ve been using this Shiseido cream. I like this because it isn’t too moisturizing and doesn’t make my skin greasy in minutes flat, but it does even my complexion out a little. It’s a great 2-in-1 sort of deal for the days when I’m really not into spending time on my face. I also like using a brightening concealer under my eyes as well as any general areas of my face that could use a little highlighting and a hair more coverage.

Between these two complexion products, I can ease the appearance of my imperfections while still looking natural. I might reach for a spot concealer if I really need it, but I’m alright with some breakouts and dark circles showing. The higher the coverage, the more I feel the need to balance it out with other makeup, and I’m trying to avoid all of that!

I finish off with some powder in order to set everything, keep oil at bay, and perfect the appearance of my pores a little bit more. This one from Laura Mercier is doing a pretty good job with that.

I’ve also tried this combination with other products, like my Nars Pure Radiant tinted moisturizer (review) with SPF 30 and Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch highlighting concealer, and that works too. If my skin is feeling particularly dry, I might reach for my Andalou Naturals CC Moisturizer (review) with SPF 30, which is great for preventing my skin from feeling tight later in the day. I just normally use the Andalou underneath foundation rather than on its own because it can make me a bit shiny.

I’m liking the Shiseido for day-to-day because it’s cheaper than the Nars – I’ve resolved to never buy another tube of the Nars because the price just feels unsustainable for me, so I’m trying to make my current tube last. I also personally prefer the L’Oreal concealers (both the Visible Lift CC Eye and the Magic Lumi highlighter) to the Maybelline version, I just like the thinner consistency and the color works perfectly for me. I’ve heard other people say the opposite, however, so it’s just personal preference. And, I do prefer my Nars translucent setting powder to my Laura Mercier, but the Nars is just in storage until Tuesday which is when we move into our new apartment!

If I want to look more polished, I’ll fill in my brows a bit, pop on a pink blush, and add some mascara and lip balm. Not an extensive routine by any means, but it is double the effort.

How about you? Which products are your absolute essentials? Can you keep your routine to under 5 products?
