Alchemy II is a limited edition holiday-time shade from Sephora’s Formula X line, and as the name suggests, it’s the second such release that they’ve created. Last year’s Alchemy came across as more of a white gold, I believe, that looked quite pretty but didn’t seem quite special enough for me to purchase. This year it’s a beautiful bronzed copper that I fell for when I first saw it in the store back in December.
Sephora describes Alchemy II as a “limited-edition, platinum-infused nail polish with a champagne rosé shimmer—bottled with an exclusive golden cap.” At $14, it’s a bit more expensive than their other colors, as Formula X cream polishes are $10.50 and their shimmery, glittery, or otherwise special effect polishes are generally $12.50.
In person, I think it looks like a straight-up copper in natural light, but bronze tones shine through more in artificial light. I’m noticing that it’s coming across quite bronze in the photos, too. Up close, I can see a lot of different colors glittering in the light – green and purple shine through as much as the more neutral colors. The particles are small enough to be difficult to capture on camera, though. It just creates a very striking overall effect.
It applies really nicely, and is fully opaque and wonderfully glossy with 2 coats. It seems to have a pretty standard dry time, not particularly speedy nor outrageously slow. I tend to have really good luck with Formula X polishes in general, though I was a little disappointed with the wear of this one. With a base coat (no top coat), I found that I had minor tip wear on day 3 and substantial chipping by the end of day 4. That’s not necessarily an exceptionally bad wear time, but it’s just nothing special and I can typically get a little more than that from my other Formula X polishes. Next time I’ll reach for a top coat.
It’s really pretty, though, and is definitely easy to get on the nails. I’m into the warmer metallic colors and I’ll be happy to have it in my collection going forward, as I don’t have anything else like it. It’s still available, though now that we’re past the holidays I don’t expect they’ll keep refilling their stock. Take a look on Sephora’s website to buy online or check in-store availability.
