Function of Beauty customized shampoo and conditioner ($36 for an 8 oz. duo)

I’ve been using customized shampoo and conditioner from Function of Beauty, and I’m very impressed with them. I was drawn to something like this and open to making a special online order because I’d recently had a bad run with several other products and it had been quite a while since I’d used a shampoo set that actually worked well for me. I also hadn’t heard of this brand until I saw a sponsored ad on Facebook, and I was immediately curious about them.

The customization process has 3 main steps: identifying your hair type, picking which hair concerns you want to address, and then picking out the presentation including the colors and scents of your products.

Other good things to know about the products that Function of Beauty makes are that they’re cruelty-free, silicone-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free, and made in the USA. You can add dyes and fragrance to your products, or leave them out.

They put your name (e.g. Function of Erin) on the box and on the bottles themselves, which is pretty adorable, and they give you a personalized packet that reiterates the hair concerns you identified, the active ingredients they use to address those, and provides the full ingredients list for each product.

My hair has been getting drier and drier, but in addition to wanting to hydrate and smooth it, I also desire some volume, so you can see on the card that I indicated all of those concerns. I look out for shampoos and conditioners that are free of sulfates and silicones because the sulfates dry my hair out, and silicones weigh it down and gunk it up. In general, I feel like I ask a lot of my hair care products because they need to balance a gentle, nourishing formulation while still providing some body and volume.

I’ve been using my set for over a month and a half now, and I’ve enjoyed it since day one. I like the superficial factors like scent, color, and degree of lather the formula provides, and my hair is just in really good shape when I use them. When I originally ordered I opted for an auto-delivery subscription to save a few dollars, and several weeks ago I went into my account and made a few adjustments to my choices based on the experience I’d had so far, and knew that I definitely wanted to keep ordering from Function of Beauty for the time being.

I had such a good experience with the products that when my husband ran out of his shampoo, he decided to order from them, too. He opted for the dye-free formulas in the larger 16 oz. bottles. The brand offers a give $5, save $5 referral code program for new customers so that if someone uses your referral link they get the money off their order and you get the money for your next order. So, he was able to use my link for his duo.

You also save 10% by subscribing to a recurring order, so we both chose that option, as well. You can always cancel or edit your subscription. Shipping is included. Here is the price list, reflecting that 10% subscription discount:

I happen to be going through the shampoo and conditioner at the same rate (which speaks to how well suited they both are for my hair, I think) and so I can keep buying the two of them together at the same time, but you can see that single bottles and mismatched sizes are also available in case that’s an issue for you. They have suggested time frames for how often your order should auto-fill based on the size of bottles you choose and how long you say your hair is, and you can fool around with those frequency settings as you like, as well.

I did adjust a couple of things for my next order, including changing the color for both products from pink to aqua, strengthening the fragrance from medium to strong, and trading out “replenish” for “deep condition” in my selection of goals to amp up the hydration a notch. You can log into your account and change your settings any time before your order is completed.

My husband and I both like the scents we chose. I use sandalwood violet, and he chose essential oils. The essential oils have a very fresh scent with noticeable peppermint. Both of our scents are really nice and quite unisex, and though I haven’t smelled the 4 other options I’d say that they did a great job of coming up with attractive scent options.

So, I’ve had really good luck with these and think they provide a pretty good value. For a thoroughly customized product with great quality, no animal testing, and excluding the kinds of ingredients I want to exclude, I think the price point is very reasonable. If you are interested in saving $5 for your order, you can buy through my affiliate link. Otherwise, you can just visit functionofbeauty.com and start playing around with the options.

Have you ever tried anything like this before, or does this sound like something you’d consider? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
