ColourPop released a set of crystal-inspired products recently and I went ahead and placed a small order the day I received the promotional email about the launch. I didn’t go crazy, I just decided to get the Aquamarine shade of the Crystal Liquid Highlighter to try the formula out. At this point most of the stuff is out of stock on the website, but as I write this Aquamarine is the only Crystal Liquid Highlighter that’s still available. I think people may be underestimating the beauty of a bluish highlight, though, because I think it’s really nice.
The highlighter is a milky fluid with a beautiful blue opalescence that is more pronounced in a heavy swatch or more subtle when thinned out on the skin. You can mix it into foundation or apply it over foundation with fingers, a brush, or a sponge. It has a thin, slippery consistency that builds subtly on the skin and diffuses seamlessly without much effort. Honestly, I’m surprised by how gentle of a look it gives. My guess is that the cooler colors of both Amethyst and Aquamarine may look particularly nice on lighter skin tones, which I was drawn to because I imagined using Aquamarine both now in the summer as well as in the colder months when my skin is even paler. I can’t speak to Amethyst, but Aquamarine definitely is just as milky white in color, if not more so, as it is blue.
In natural light you can see that when worked into the skin here on my hand it looks quite soft but pearly. ColourPop says that it has a Pearlized finish, which sounds right to me. In my experience the Super Shock highlights in the little plastic pots have a stronger effect than this. I think it’s super pretty, and the gentle effect means that I don’t have to be overly careful when applying and working it into the rest of my makeup. I’ve been wearing it to my boring office job in varying amounts and haven’t felt weird about it at all.
Here I’m wearing just foundation (the Milk Makeup Sunshine Skin Tint) with Aquamarine on top, placed over my cheekbones, above my brow, and down the bridge of my nose. Not bad, right? I actually thought it looked really fresh in the context of this ultra minimal makeup.
It kind of ends up having the feel of a lightweight oil, and it moves around well when I’m placing it on my skin but I don’t think I can say it sets and dries 100%. It does disappear kind of fast if I layer too much other makeup over it, as well. So for this photo I started out with a more generous amount applied over my foundation, and then I added a light dusting of the Cover FX Perfect Setting Powder and Too Faced Love Flush Blush in Baby Love, plus brows and mascara. You can always apply it as a last step for an even stronger look, and it won’t be difficult to blend into any other makeup that’s already been applied.
I find that I don’t need much product to get a nice look, and it generally lasts me through an 8 hour day but seems to fade after that. For $9 you get a nice glass bottle with a pump and 0.85 fl. oz. so it’s a really nice value, and it’s a cute-looking product, too. It even comes in a nice outer box with some substance to it, which makes me feel like it’s pretty well protected during shipping.
Check it out here. Did you get your hands on any of the crystal releases? How’d they work for you?
