I guess it’s sale season! Anticipating the springtime 20% off sale at Kiehl’s (which will continue until 5/22), I’d been holding out on buying anything from them over the past couple of months so I could stock up all at once. This time around I was a VIP rewards member so right at the beginning of the sale I qualified for a 25% discount for a 24-hour period, which is when my husband and I visited a nearby store. Beyond that sale, I also received my new Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner, my order from The Ordinary which took a while to ship, and found a new cleansing oil to try out.
I have some new stuff I’m trying out thanks to an Ulta 21 Days of Beauty special, the recent Sephora sale, and another shopping trip to Too Cool for School. Of the products I ended up with, maybe half of them were things I’d been really tossing around the digital cart for a while and half were more impulsive purchases. I just read that sentence back and it’s not right, the majority of these things were pretty impulsive. And it was fun to shop.
I’ve been using customized shampoo and conditioner from Function of Beauty, and I’m very impressed with them. I was drawn to something like this and open to making a special online order because I’d recently had a bad run with several other products and it had been quite a while since I’d used a shampoo set that actually worked well for me. I also hadn’t heard of this brand until I saw a sponsored ad on Facebook, and I was immediately curious about them.
I’ve been buying some more stuff. A few basics, a few replacements of similar products I’m running out of, and a few nice-to-haves. I’ve been trying a couple of products for a couple of weeks now but most of it is brand new and I’m just starting to try out the different bits. I have some cleansing products and makeup from Sephora, lip colors from MAC, and some natural bath and body from Whole Foods.
I’ve been using henna to dye my hair for a couple of years now to achieve red hair and great gray hair coverage. For the first time, I recently tried something a little different – a henna and indigo blend for a medium brown shade. Fooling around with indigo is something I intended to get into from the first time I used henna, but it turned out that I really liked the red for a long time and found the idea of experimenting with recipes and proportions of two dyes to be more effort than I wanted to put in. So for this change in routine, I decided to try a Medium Brown henna and indigo blend from The Henna Guys, which is available on their website as well as Amazon.
I’ve gotten out of the swing of reviewing empty products every month, and have been thinking it might make more sense to chat about them every two months or so. The upside of that is that there’s just a wider variety of stuff to talk about, though it also means there’s more to cover in a single post, as well. That means I’ll try to be quick as I give an overview of each product and determine whether it was worth the purchase!
I’m said very positive things about the Danish brand Raunsborg in the past, and I’m really excited to be able to say that their products are now available in the US through the website A Bit of Denmark. The site carries a bunch of skin, body, and fragrance products from the brand, and also has a collection of travel sizes available both individually and as a complete set.
Now after finishing up all of those empties I just wrote about, I’ve been making small shopping runs to take advantage of things like post-holiday sales and new releases at the drugstore to replenish. I have some stuff from Sephora, Nature Republic, Vitacost, Whole Foods, Costco, and Duane Reade to share.
As the fall got into full swing and I got married, traveled, and then later as the holidays set in, I let my monthly empties reviews get away from me. At this point, instead of just a January empties I have several months’ worth of finished products to talk about. It makes for a full bag of trash, but this post won’t take years to get through. It does mean that there’s a fairly wide variety of products to chat about, though!
Over the past year, I did a lot of traveling, moved across the country, and got married, which sometimes got in the way of trying lots of new products. After quitting birth control last fall, I also spent much of the year struggling with new hormonal acne woes, which at times kept me from feeling super motivated when it came to certain kinds of experimentation. However, as I was going through all of the products I tried over the last year I was surprised at how easy it was to identify a bunch of standout products that made a big impact on me and became staples in my collection.
