I’ve taken an inadvertent break from the blog but wanted to mention a handful of things I’ve landed on and have been really enjoying. The truth is that while I still buy stuff occasionally, I’m not doing it with the same hunger and frequency as I have in the past. That means I’m sitting with each product over a longer and more consistent period of time, and really trying to use things up before moving on. Here are about 10 skincare, makeup, and hair care products I’ve had great luck with and are very fond of right now.
I’m a sucker for a mystery box, and so Makeup Geek immediately had my attention when they released a mystery box for purple products for $20, with an advertised savings of 60%. I bought a previous mystery box from Makeup Geek in 2017, which was a bigger bundle of products for $50, and I’m personally glad that they’ve tried this approach a couple of times because it’s a neat way to try products that I wouldn’t necessarily think to pick out for myself. This box was supposed to provide a collection of purple shades, which gave me a little pause but ultimately couldn’t stop me from taking a gamble.
Colourpop swatches & review: Fame eyeshadow palette, Lux Lipsticks, Blotted Lips, and No Filter ConcealerBy Erin on June 11, 2018
I’ve made a couple of Colourpop orders in recent weeks and have had a chance to try the stuff for long enough to offer some thoughts. I have one concealer, four Lux Lipsticks, two Blotted Lips, and one 16-shade eyeshadow palette. Not everything I use from Colourpop ends up being a total hit for me, but they make so many great things at such an affordable price that it’s easy for me to get excited about their new releases and I continue to reach for their products day to day.
I’m glad more people on the internet have started to talk about the fact that 15% off at Sephora really doesn’t go that far. However, I still partake and enjoy. I try not to go crazy, but I’m definitely kind of hooked on the twice-yearly sale endorphins. During the sales, I typically buy just a little more than the normal routine stuff and take the chance to try new products. This time around I came away with makeup and skincare from Fenty Beauty, DR. JART+, Becca, Laura Mercier, Farmacy, Herbivore, and Sephora Collection.
I’ve made two orders from ColourPop this summer and have bought a lot of different things to try. So far, I’ve only talked about the Crystal Liquid Highlighter, but over the two orders I’ve also collected a couple of lip colors, 7 pressed powder eyeshadows and a magnetic palette, a pressed powder highlighter, a pressed powder bronzer, and a Super Shock eyeshadow. These products and I have had some time to get a little acquainted and I have swatches and thoughts to pass along.
I have some new stuff I’m trying out thanks to an Ulta 21 Days of Beauty special, the recent Sephora sale, and another shopping trip to Too Cool for School. Of the products I ended up with, maybe half of them were things I’d been really tossing around the digital cart for a while and half were more impulsive purchases. I just read that sentence back and it’s not right, the majority of these things were pretty impulsive. And it was fun to shop.
I’ve been buying some more stuff. A few basics, a few replacements of similar products I’m running out of, and a few nice-to-haves. I’ve been trying a couple of products for a couple of weeks now but most of it is brand new and I’m just starting to try out the different bits. I have some cleansing products and makeup from Sephora, lip colors from MAC, and some natural bath and body from Whole Foods.
I’ve recently done some shopping from both Innisfree and Too Cool For School. I’ve had a great experience with Innisfree in the past and just try to wait for the website to introduce attractive deals before ordering. Too Cool For School is a little less convenient to order at the moment, though Sephora has begun selling some of their products relatively recently. However, they have a flagship store in Soho, New York City, that I recently visited for the first time and I was able to take advantage of a deal.
This is a big deal for me—it’s the very first time I bought myself some Sugarpill. I received an email notification from them on February 1 about a new Valentine’s release, and had submitted my order less than 24 hours later. The Feline Fancy collection is priced at $48 and comes with a 4-color eyeshadow palette, a liquid lip color, and some flipping adorable art on the packaging. It arrived at my home on February 13th which meant I could actually start playing around with it on Valentine’s Day.
Over 2016 I generally reduced the amount of cosmetics that I purchased and really scrutinized new releases, which means that a Beauty Loon year-end wrap up can be quite succinct and focused. There were a few specific brands that became new loves for me, so you’ll see some brands repeat in my product picks, and I’ve gone ahead and broken down the favorites into 10 product categories. Ok, let’s go!
