Over 2016 I generally reduced the amount of cosmetics that I purchased and really scrutinized new releases, which means that a Beauty Loon year-end wrap up can be quite succinct and focused. There were a few specific brands that became new loves for me, so you’ll see some brands repeat in my product picks, and I’ve gone ahead and broken down the favorites into 10 product categories. Ok, let’s go!
I’ve found myself reaching for the same base makeup products nearly everyday when I’m getting ready for work, many of which are affordable, and all of which have been working really well for me. Most of them have only been mentioned in passing on the blog, but deserve a little more attention. So, here are the primer and complexion basics, as well as a mascara, that I’ve been loving recently.
The Rimmel Stay Matte Primer is a product that I haven’t had with me for much of the summer while I was traveling because I tried to be very restrained in how much makeup I packed and carried with me from place to place. I reunited with it about a month ago and have slowly fell back in the habit of reaching for it. I bought this last winter, not too long after it was released, having been temped by it’s claims and budget-friendly price tag and I’ve kept it close at hand for most of the time since.
When I was packing for our trip to the Southwest, I knew I should be prepared for some heat. However, about a week into the trip it became clear that my skin wasn’t reacting the way I had assumed it would – I’d completely underestimated the dryness of the climate. Because the makeup in my collection was either going to be carried with me on the trip or heading into storage, I had decided to bring along a handful of different foundations, which would allow me to experiment with a number of different product combinations to help me deal with the climate.
Like the Aloe Protective Serum that I recently reviewed, the Tea Tree Pore Minimizer is a product that I picked up during one of The Body Shop’s sales sometime around Black Friday. I hadn’t heard anything about it before so I really didn’t know what to expect, but I do like to get a little help with oil and visible pores around my t-zone and this seemed like an interesting product to try out.
Lots of things are put on sale after the holidays, but I found a few small surprises over the past few days that I’m pretty happy about. I wanted to share the deals I took advantage in case you’d be interested in checking any of these products out! I shouldn’t be spending a lot of money post-holidays, but with these finds I didn’t have to.
Growing up, Sleeping Beauty was always my favorite Disney movie. The backgrounds are hand painted gorgeousness, it has a magical medieval flavor, and the music is is, well, Tchaikovsky. That tune that’s playing as Aurora walks up the tower staircase to her needly doom? Killer. And then there’s Maleficent, one of my favorite villains, period. I love her power and elegance, her minions and raven, devil horns and green flames. So I was pretty excited to get my hands on ELF’s new Maleficent look book this weekend when I saw it pop up at a nearby Walgreens (they also have versions for Ursula, Cruella De Vil, and Snow White’s Evil Queen – all good options!). I’ve been trying out some of the products and have photos to share with you.
Two products I received over the summer in my Sample Society subscription boxes (you can read about all of the products I received here) were the Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara as well as the Jane Iredale PureLash Extender & Conditioner. I’ve been wearing them off and on for the past few weeks, and have discovered that they make a pretty good team. Each one on their own (or in the case of the conditioner, paired with a different mascara) left me a little disappointed, but they seem to be formulated to complement each other and I really like wearing them together.
This past spring as the weather started to get warmer, I noticed that my skin was starting to get a little oilier and I decided that I needed to make a change in my makeup routine to keep my foundation lasting throughout the day. In addition to experimenting with moisturizers, I tried a small handful of primers to see if one of them might help me out: Neutrogena Shine Control Primer, Bare Minerals Prime Time, and Benefit’s The POREfessional. Unfortunately, they weren’t making a difference for me and I was starting to feel like I was getting ripped off. Closer to the beginning of summer, I decided to try L’Oreal’s Magic Perfecting Base when my local drugstore was offering 25% off L’Oreal cosmetics. This primer stands above the others that I’ve tried, and I’ve continued to use it daily all summer long.
