The Ordinary Alpha Lipoic Acid 5%, Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, and Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%

By on February 24, 2018
The Ordinary Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% ($6.80), Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane ($9.60), Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% ($5.90), and Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% ($7.90)

I have thoroughly tried four more serums from The Ordinary, and these are all under the $10 mark. Two are definite favorites from The Ordinary line, and two were somewhat disappointing. I love the low price point, which allows me to try lots of new active ingredients for the first time and see how they work for my skin, and I also really enjoy that the Ordinary’s products often have very no-nonsense ingredients. This time around I will be reviewing the Alpha Lipoic Acid 5%, Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, and Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%.

Winter Skincare Empties

By on February 9, 2018
Skincare I’ve used up

I haven’t meant to be silent on the blog for so long, but I recently had surgery and took for granted how unproductive I’d be while recovering at home. I thought I’d get back into it with an easygoing empties review. I go through a lot of skincare products on an ongoing basis, and I have a box full of stuff that I’ve used up over the past few months. Particularly because it’s a cold time of year, I have a lot of products for dry skin, and I’ve really had a good experience with most of them.

Makeup and skincare favorites of 2017

By on January 10, 2018
Makeup and skincare favorites of 2017

I don’t round up favorite products on a regular basis except for at the end of the year, so this is my chance to put some of my reviews in perspective and talk about the stuff that really stood out to me. I’m highlighting some skincare and some makeup that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and span a wide range of price points. And I have to get this up and out there before I start talking about all of the newstuff I’ve bought for myself this winter and will be trying in 2018, so let’s go!

Five ways to keep skin hydrated in the winter

By on November 19, 2017
Keeping skin hydrated with cleansers, toners, lotions, creams, oils, and balms

I have combination skin that’s very prone to dryness and dehydration, particularly around my eyes and cheeks. About two weeks ago my skin started getting hit hard by the changing weather and colder, drier air and I’ve needed to adjust my skincare in a big way. Dry skin generally requires more care than just a heavy face cream, and I’ve developed a handful of strategies for alleviating tight, irritated, and generally sad winter skin. Here are five main ways I approach dry skin, and a bunch of my favorite products I’ve found in each category.

Summer empties: The Ordinary, Kiehl’s, IGK, Weleda, Sun Bum, and more

By on September 6, 2017
Products I used up over the summer

I’ve filled up another little bag with empty products that I used up over the past season. As is typical, most of the bag is full of skincare—I managed to go through 6 serums, actually, which is some sort of accomplishment. There’s also cleansers, moisturizers, a little bit of makeup, and some hair and body care. In general, I really liked a lot of the stuff I used up, too!

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA

By on July 26, 2017
The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA ($11.50 for 30 ml)

I have another treatment from The Ordinary that I want to talk about, this time it’s the anti-aging Matrixyl 10% plus HA. Like much of The Ordinary’s product line, this is an affordable serum with a specific ingredient focus and target. Matrixyl is a peptide, and in the case for this serum, there are two generations here: Matrixyl 3000 and Matrixyl Synthe’6 at a combined concentration 10%. The “HA” in the title refers to what The Ordinary calls a specialized hyaluronic acid delivery system.

Spring empties

By on June 18, 2017
Some of the products I used up over the past few months

It’s been a while since I’ve gone through a batch of empty products. I’ve recently been unloading my empties whenever the bag starts to overflow, which seems to translate to a seasonal basis, and summer is just a few days away. I’m also going to be moving apartments soon and so it’s an appropriate time to be going through the cabinets and cleaning things out a bit! So, here’s a look at all of the skincare, makeup, body, and hair care products I used up throughout the spring and will be discarding.

The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10%

By on June 11, 2017
The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% ($7.90 for 30 ml)

I have another item from The Ordinary to talk about, and it’s the first serum I’ve tried from them that targets wrinkles. Argireline is a peptide complex, and I hadn’t heard of it before shopping on The Ordinary’s site. In all honesty I think that if I had done more research before placing my order, I probably would have bought something else, but it’s not a bad ingredient and I’ve found it an interesting one to learn more about because it has a different kind of effect than a lot of others I’m familiar with.

The Ordinary skincare: Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution, Azelaic Acid, and Plant-Derived Squalane

By on April 7, 2017
The Ordinary Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F ($17.80), 100% Plant-Derived Squalane ($7.90), and Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% ($7.90)

The Ordinary is really new to the skincare scene but has quickly caught everyone’s attention for their really straightforward and affordable products (also, cruelty-free). I have purchased 5 items from them so far but can’t try them out all of them at once, so I thought to start out I’d talk about 3 products that I’m using right now: a vitamin treatment, a direct acid, and a hydrator. Today I’m reviewing the Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F (vitamin C in a lightweight oil, $17.80), Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% (multifunctional brightening treatment, $7.90), and 100% Plant-Derived Squalane (lightweight hydrator, $7.90).
