Recently when Sephora was offering double points on skincare purchases for Beauty Insiders, I decided to try some new sun protection. I’ll absolutely admit that it felt a little strange since Seattle winters generally involve short daylight hours and overcast skies, but I knew that I’d want to be prepared for the odd day here and there where I actually might see the sun. I decided to try the Shiseido Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector, which comes with SPF 43.
I actually think that we’ve seen a little more sun around these parts than we normally do at this time of year, so I’ve definitely had the chance to try this product out. The UV Protector is tinted and is available in three shades, and I use the lightest. The coverage is extremely light, though. It does even out redness in my face just a little bit and it seems to smooth out my skin texture a little, as well, but it looks extremely natural.
You get just over an ounce of product in the tube and the packaging seriously wastes no space, which I love. It’s very easy to store, and it has a very small, controlled nozzle that makes it very difficult to over-squeeze and waste product. It’s easy to use and would work really well in a travel bag.
SPF 43 is pretty high – actually, the highest daily SPF I’ve ever gone for. Normally I go for products around SPF 30. However, it’s good to remember that you need to apply a very generous amount of product and continually reapply ever couple of hours in order to get the full value of that SPF rating. I spend a good amount of time outdoors because I walk during the day rather than driving or taking the bus, and since I wear makeup I don’t reapply SPF to my face after leaving my apartment in the morning.
I really enjoy how the UV Protector wears on my combination skin. It evens out the tone and texture just enough to make me look a little more awake, and it doesn’t make my t-zone oily. What I’ve been doing on the weekends is wearing it alone on my face when I go out with my boyfriend for lunch, and then later in the day I’ll tap some tissue around my face to soak up any excess moisture before applying some loose powder foundation for a little extra coverage in the evening. I don’t see any issues with oil when I do this. If I use it under a more hydrating liquid foundation, I just avoid applying moisturizer in the center of my face before using the UV Protector because it’s a hydrating product on its own and there’s no need for me to double up.
In addition to sun protection, Shiseido says that the UV Protector includes “SuperVeil-UV 360™ offering comprehensive protection of the skin’s surface, and Profense CEL™ which protects cells and DNA, and helps inhibit enzyme activity—the causes of wrinkles and uneven skintone. Thiotaurine and rose apple leaf extract are effective in inhibiting oxidation caused by external environmental factors.” It’s also free of parabens and phthalates.
Shiseido and Sephora do not openly disclose the ingredients on their websites, so I have some photos of the box to share. I wish the text was easier to read, though. I swear they choose fonts that are purposefully difficult to decipher.
