I’m currently trying to work my way through a bunch of drugstore mascaras that I’ve never tried before (used to be a Clinique loyalist), and the mascara of the moment is Maybelline’s The Rocket. I see beauty folks talk about this one all the time and was excited to see if it would work for me.
This is a mascara targeted for big volume. I have it in Blackest Black, and in the washable formula (which is always what I go for). Clearly, it’s a good mascara. It goes on smoothly, and I don’t find that it flakes or smudges on my over the course of a normal day. It doesn’t feel overly wet or messy but I wouldn’t say it’s a dry formula. Like the shade name suggests, it provides deep dark color. It also gives me volume and lift – enough lift that I find my lashes look pretty similar whether I curled them before application or not. And despite the “volume” label, I think it also gives some length. At the very least, it does not make lashes look short and stubby.
That being said, this isn’t the mascara for me. I generally think of myself as someone who enjoys volume mascaras, but this one is a bit much for me. I wipe the brush off pretty thoroughly before I apply it (I did so for these photos, too) because otherwise it’s just really heavy looking on me. It does tend to clump lashes together. It’d be better suited for bolder eye shadow and eyeliner looks, but most of the time my makeup is more natural than that and I find it looks unbalanced.
So, my guess is that whether this works for you or not will depend on how much eye makeup you like to wear along with it. Other than that, it’s totally great.
I’m currently traveling and have worn this in all kinds of weather now, from hot sunny days to snow – yeah, we experienced two days of snow while in Santa Fe earlier this week. I’ve had no issues, it’s been great. After about a month and a half, though, I’m a little anxious to move on to a mascara that suits me better.
