I mentioned in my last post about Maybelline’s original Colossal mascara that I had set it aside for a bit in favor of a waterproof mascara while we were traveling in Asia during monsoon season. I had grabbed a similar one, The Colossal Cat Eyes, thinking it’d be fun to compare. This one advertises a “full & spiked” look with a collagen formula and “claw brush”.

The brush is a long but narrow one with short, tightly packed natural bristles. It has a gently curved shape, which I think they try to sell as a means for getting elongated outer corners on your top lashes. It’s pretty different from the original Colossal, and creates a very different effect, as well.

This mascara gives very long, lifted lashes with a lot less volume than The Colossal. I have it in the same color, Glam Black, but it doesn’t give quite the same impact on the eyes because so much less product ends up on lashes. I was really surprised initially at how volumizing it wasn’t, considering it was a spinoff of The Colossal and part of the Volum’Express line. I will say that the brush works beautifully for adding natural darkness and definition to the lower lashes, as it didn’t deposit any excess product.

I used this through a lot of rainy days, and it does hold up to water. I think that when there’s a lot of sweating involved, my skin produced more oil and I ended up with a little bit of smudging, but nothing terrible. And as we started to transition to fall that went away, which I assume I can attribute to my skin becoming less oily.

In general, I always ended up with very long, curled, and defined lashes with this. I’d compare it to Illegal Length mascara from Maybelline (review), although I think I ended up enjoying Illegal Length a bit more. A big reason for that is that I like Illegal Length’s wand better. There’s something about the very short, tight bristles that Cat Eyes has that made me dirty up my eyelid right near the base of my lashes almost every time I used it. Maybe it’s because I’d push a little too hard at the base of my lashes, I’m not entirely sure.

In general, I liked Cat Eyes and used it all the way up until it dried out. It made me feel really pretty, and worked well for minimal makeup days (perfect for vacation). In the future, I’ll probably opt for Illegal Length instead, though. It’s a personal preference thing.
