Earlier this spring, I went to find a new mascara and found that L’Oreal eye products were on a buy-one-get-one-50%-off sale, so I brought home a liner, too. I’ve been trying out the classic Voluminous Carbon Black mascara and Lineur Intense brush tip liquid liner for the first time. These are affordable and widely available products, and I’ve just generally been curious to give them a go.
The Voluminous mascara has a classic bristle wand that tapers a bit at the end. It’s big but not huge, if you know what I mean. It’s in a sleek black tube with a gold cap – I really enjoy L’Oreal’s mascara packaging in general, as it usually has some sophistication to it. None of the loud, neon and oversized plastic that you see a lot in the drugstore.
It’s formulated to build, separate and volumize lashes. I do get volume with enough separation for it to look fairly natural, but I don’t get much in the way of length and lift. I miss having some lift and curl, and though I do curl my lashes before applying mascara, my lashes definitely droop after having the mascara on for a few hours.
So, in terms of appearance, I’d say it’s ok. The deep black color is nice, and I’ve been using this tube for a couple of months and it has continued to work well without getting too dried out or starting to flake, which is something that happens to me a lot as mascaras age. Where it really misses for me, though, is in longevity. It wears well for maybe 5-6 hours, and after that it always smudges under my eyes. I definitely can’t wear it on my lower lashes or it gets messy even faster. The upside is that it comes off easily with a wet tissue at the end of the day. Ultimately, though, I won’t repurchase this one.
The liner is packaged very similarly, though strangely doesn’t have any labeling on the tube. This one has a thin brush tip, but L’Oreal also sells Lineur Intense felt tip and Telescopic brush tip liners.
I haven’t had good luck with this one at all. The formula is thin, very black (I bought it in Carbon Black) and goes on opaquely, but the brush is very ineffective. It’s thin, but doesn’t taper at all and so I feel like it’s a very small, floppy ribbon that’s been cut bluntly at the end. This may be an anomaly, but my brush is also slightly curved, which adds to my difficulty.
I’m not a whiz at liquid liner, so there certainly may be others out there that have a lot more control than I do, but I can’t get a nice thin and even line with this. I’ve tried a similar liner from ELF, the Essential Expert liquid liner, and while that one isn’t as black and opaque, I thought it was very easy to maneuver.
So, I don’t know, I think I need to find a new home for this product. I’ve tried to use it a 2 or 3 times and it’s just not the one for me. Even on my hand I wasn’t getting a good line, which made me feel a little better about my eyeliner failure.
The Voluminous mascara costs $7.25 on the L’Oreal website, and the Lineur Intense brush tip liner is $8.48. I usually have good luck with L’Oreal products, but these two are misses for me. Have you had a different experience with either of these?
