I’ve taken an inadvertent break from the blog but wanted to mention a handful of things I’ve landed on and have been really enjoying. The truth is that while I still buy stuff occasionally, I’m not doing it with the same hunger and frequency as I have in the past. That means I’m sitting with each product over a longer and more consistent period of time, and really trying to use things up before moving on. Here are about 10 skincare, makeup, and hair care products I’ve had great luck with and are very fond of right now.
Like a lot of people, I was initially skeptical when Tati Westbrook announced that she was releasing a dietary supplement to nourish hair, skin, and nails. However, it had been a few years since I’d tried a supplement targeting my outward appearance, and I realized something that made me think about her launch a little differently. It occurred to me that, considering the rampant problems with the supplement industry, I might be actually better off considering a product made by someone I at least am familiar with in the virtual sense than I would be with a company I might find on a store shelf and know absolutely nothing about. I ordered a three month supply, which was a time frame I figured was long enough to allow me to hopefully observe some results.
Hey, I bought some things a little bit of a discount. Wanna see what I got? I took advantage of sales last week at Sephora and Kiehl’s that happened to begin over the same weekend, which I’m sure was no coincidence. I grabbed a couple of things impulsively, but more than anything I took it as a chance to stock up on the kinds of products that I run through the quickest, in the hopes that I can push off needing to make additional purchases over the next several months.
I haven’t shared thoughts and before-after photos for this henna hair color from Light Mountain yet, but it’s the one I’ve been using for the better part of a year. Once I started using a henna shade blended with indigo rather than just pure henna, it took me time to find a formula and shade that worked for me. Once I landed on this one, I kept with it. I use one 113 g box per color application and buy it on Amazon in a 3-pack for $14.99, so it’s definitely accessible and affordable. It’s also made with just three 100% USDA Certified Organic plant ingredients, and the brand lists 15 shades plus a colorless neutral option on their website.
I’ve filled up another little bag with empty products that I used up over the past season. As is typical, most of the bag is full of skincare—I managed to go through 6 serums, actually, which is some sort of accomplishment. There’s also cleansers, moisturizers, a little bit of makeup, and some hair and body care. In general, I really liked a lot of the stuff I used up, too!
It’s been a while since I’ve gone through a batch of empty products. I’ve recently been unloading my empties whenever the bag starts to overflow, which seems to translate to a seasonal basis, and summer is just a few days away. I’m also going to be moving apartments soon and so it’s an appropriate time to be going through the cabinets and cleaning things out a bit! So, here’s a look at all of the skincare, makeup, body, and hair care products I used up throughout the spring and will be discarding.
I guess it’s sale season! Anticipating the springtime 20% off sale at Kiehl’s (which will continue until 5/22), I’d been holding out on buying anything from them over the past couple of months so I could stock up all at once. This time around I was a VIP rewards member so right at the beginning of the sale I qualified for a 25% discount for a 24-hour period, which is when my husband and I visited a nearby store. Beyond that sale, I also received my new Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner, my order from The Ordinary which took a while to ship, and found a new cleansing oil to try out.
I have some new stuff I’m trying out thanks to an Ulta 21 Days of Beauty special, the recent Sephora sale, and another shopping trip to Too Cool for School. Of the products I ended up with, maybe half of them were things I’d been really tossing around the digital cart for a while and half were more impulsive purchases. I just read that sentence back and it’s not right, the majority of these things were pretty impulsive. And it was fun to shop.
I’ve been using customized shampoo and conditioner from Function of Beauty, and I’m very impressed with them. I was drawn to something like this and open to making a special online order because I’d recently had a bad run with several other products and it had been quite a while since I’d used a shampoo set that actually worked well for me. I also hadn’t heard of this brand until I saw a sponsored ad on Facebook, and I was immediately curious about them.
I’ve been buying some more stuff. A few basics, a few replacements of similar products I’m running out of, and a few nice-to-haves. I’ve been trying a couple of products for a couple of weeks now but most of it is brand new and I’m just starting to try out the different bits. I have some cleansing products and makeup from Sephora, lip colors from MAC, and some natural bath and body from Whole Foods.
